Markus Heckmann, MD

Dr. Heckmann is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. He completed his studies in medicine at the University of Heidelberg in 2014. He then completed his specialist training in the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology at Heidelberg University Hospital. In his dissertation, he developed a new gene therapy approach for the treatment of a genetic heart muscle disease and graduated summa cum laude. In addition to working for several years in the cardiology and gastroenterology/infectiology intensive care units at the University Hospital, he provided clinical care for patients after heart transplantation for many years and was an integral part of the special outpatient clinics for cardiomyopathies and heart failure. He was involved in setting up the first cardio-oncology outpatient clinic in Germany and has published numerous research papers in this field.

Dr. Heckmann is proficient in German, French, English, and Spanish, enabling him to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie (DGK) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Dr. Heckmann’s extensive training and research background, coupled with his dedication to patient care, ensure that his patients receive the highest standard of treatment. His involvement in both clinical practice and academic teaching at Heidelberg University Hospital reflects his commitment to advancing the field of cardiology through education and innovative research. He has been a private lecturer in internal medicine at the Heidelberg Medical Faculty since 2023. In addition to his own teaching activities, he is involved in the development of the teaching and training curriculum in the Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Pneumology at Heidelberg University Hospital and will continue to be active in research and teaching.
